The US open water swimmer Haley Anderson became the first gold medallist of the 16th FINA World Championships. The now two-time world champion and silver Olympic medallist earned the title in the women’s 5km open water swimming event.

From the very beginning the experts predicted leading positions for the athletes from the USA and Brazil. Alongside Hungary, the above-mentioned countries are unofficial powerhouses in open water swimming. That’s why the victory of the reigning world champion didn’t come as a surprise. Throughout the whole distance, Haley Anderson was among the first ones, but later the 5km gold medallist of the Barcelona 2013 World Championships managed to summon up and leave all her opponents behind. This medal is the 500th one for the US national team in the history of open water swimming competitions.

The US athlete placed first with Kalliopi Araouzu (GRE) taking the second place and Finnia Wunram (GER) rounding out the podium in third.

Hoi Man Lok, a 14-year-old swimmer from Hong Kong, is worth to be mentioned as one of the youngest swimmers who competed alongside the above mentioned athletes.
