FINA Bureau Honorary Member Gennady Aleshin stated that the International Swimming Federation (FINA) is not to comment refereeing in the mixed duet synchronised swimming event at the FINA World Championships in Kazan.

On July 26, Aleksandr Maltsev and Darina Valitova performed in the first-ever World Championships mixed duet technical routine event, scoring 88.2986 points which brought them the silver medal. The American athletes Bill May and Christina Jones grabbed gold. In the preliminaries their results were as follows: Russian duet of Maltsev and Valitova scored 88.8539 whereas the American duet of May and Jones scored 86.7108.

Gana Maksimova, the Russian mixed duet’s coach, was surprised with the way the event was judged. Minister of Sport of the Russian Federation, Vitaly Mutko, also expressed his disappointment with the refereeing. He also mentioned that on Monday FINA representatives will need to clarify why such scores were given to the mixed duets.

“We need to keep our emotions at bay. The decision is final; all protests are submitted within half an hour after an event. There was no protest filed. I do not understand who on earth overreacted and why. FINA will not react to it, because there is no ground for reaction,” Gennady Aleshin commented over the phone.

Free routine medals will also be contested by mixed duets at the FINA World Championships in Kazan.
