China’s He Chao managed to grab world champion title in the 3m springboard event at the 16th FINA World Championships in Kazan. He outmatched Olympic champion Ilia Zakharov of Russia in the battle for the first place.

These two distinguished athletes met to clash for gold, although it was also expected that two other powerhouses, Olympic synchro diving silver medallist Evgenii Kuznetsov, of Russia, or Olympic champion in the same discipline Cao Yuan, of China, will join them in the medal hunt. But unfortunately the compatriots of Ilia Zakharov and He Chao had to drop out of the race for medals at different stages of competition. In the build-up to the final dive, it was clear that the fate of the title would be decided in the head-to-head contest between the major contenders.

Both divers saved a dive with a 3.8 degree of difficulty for the last round. The outcome was meant to depend on how skillfully and flawlessly the dives will be executed. Ilia Zakharov who was first to dive earned 91.65. Curiously enough, the day before in the women’s 10m platform final a successful dive of one of the female athletes shattered a Chinese diver’s confidence. Therefore, being first to dive definitely came out as an advantage for the host diver but He Chao was hard as iron despite the pressure from the crowd and his opponent’s high results. He got his 93.60 points in a fair contest and left the swimming pool with the double world champion title under his belt.

The bronze medal was claimed by Jack Laugher from Great Britain, who edged out another excellent Chinese diver Cao Yuan to the forth place. Evgenii Kuznetsov finished fifth.
