World champion in the women’s 100m breaststroke, Yuliya Efimova, admitted that she was nervous because of having to perform in front of the stands full of Russian fans at the FINA World Championships in Kazan.

“I’m happy with my 100m win, though it was far from being my best time. Gold is gold. I’m glad that I won the first gold for Team Russia and I hope this victory will encourage other swimmers of our team to bring more trophies. Why did Ruta fall off the pace in the second split? We were all nervous. The struggle was tense. Personally, I was anxious because it was my home Championships and I could not just lose this heat. All the girls slowed down in the last fifteen metres. The final touch decided the winner,” Efimova said.
