China’s two-time Olympic champion continued his golden streak today. Sun Yang claimed another gold in the men’s 800m freestyle event at the 16th FINA World Championships in Kazan. He grabbed the first gold in the 400m freestyle and silver in the 200m freestyle.

“I am proud I've won this medal in the 800m freestyle, which is the same event I won in at Shanghai 2011. It’s been quite a tough race due to the fact that lots of big-name swimmers competed alongside with me. All in all, a lot of gifted young swimmers emerged in our discipline, for example Gregorio Paltrinieri I’ve been competing with today, he is quite a challenging opponent. Preparation for the races is not that easy, right the opposite, we should work hard, be straightly focused on nothing but trainings. I try to look up to the best swimmers of our time. Katinka Hosszu is one of them, I like her approach to training sessions and she serves as an example for me. I usually try to do my best, to show what I am capable of,” the world champion said.

According to the Chinese sprinter, the competitions in Shanghai proved to be a very important start. Sun Yang said that he likes to compete in different cities, but the moments he experienced in these cities will stay with him forever. Yang suggested that FINA should consider hosting the World Championships in the largest city of China.

The athlete also added that it is not easy for the Chinese national team to earn victories in swimming.

“It is very hard for me and for my teammates to compete against European athletes. We do our best to perform as one team, one unity, after all we are all professionals. In the preliminary round, semis and final the competition was stiff, but we were ready for this. I hope we will show much better results tomorrow and the following days. Our goal is to become a leading swimming nation and successfully compete against rivals from Europe and America,” Sun Yang said.
