President of the Russian Swimming Federation Vladimir Salnikov, who is currently on a visit to the host city of the 22nd Winter Olympic Games, said that the 2020 FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) may be held in Sochi.

“Here I had the opportunity to meet with the President of the International Swimming Federation (FINA), Julio Maglione, and FINA Executive Director, Cornel Marculescu,” ITAR-TASS quoted Vladimir Salnikov as saying. “The question was to consider the option of nominating Sochi to host the World Short Course Swimming Championships in 2020. This suggests that they have the impression that such plans are completely real, especially nowadays when pools are installed in the stadiums. It is quite possible to install such a facility in Sochi.”

“All the proposals were put forth during our conversation with the President of the ROC Alexander Zhukov, and he had no objection, and I also shared thoughts with the Governor of the Krasnodar Krai Alexander Tkachev and mayor of the city Alexander Pakhomov, who also did not mind,” said the President of the Russian Swimming Federation.

As we reported earlier, the newly built 45,000-seat Kazan Arena Stadium and the Aquatics Palace will be the main cluster for the 16th FINA World Championships. Two swimming pools - one for competitions and one for workouts – will be installed in the stadium's territory. A temporary pool – the Water Pool Arena with a capacity to seat 3,000 people – will be built near the Aquatics Palace.
